Magnum Recoil: Is It Too Much?
A jackal car that did what it did and escaped from the safety of a car reinforced with steel and heavy wood was a serious problem.

A .38 Special could be used in this revolver as a target and practical load, and a powerful Magnum load would not fit in a .38 Special revolver. The long-range accuracy of the .357 Magnum is a major advantage of the cartridge.
Many .357 Magnum revolver accuracy records shot at 600 yards stand today. Of course, you need a big-bodied, long revolver to match those results.
In a strong revolver, the Magnum is a handloader's dream. The Hornady 125-grain XTP is one of my favorite bullets.

The 125 grain XTP is a fine defense and varmint load, but just the same, the velocity of the 125 grain can be matched with a 140 grain bullet with careful handloading.
If you understand powder selection and bullet drag, the 140 Grain XTP can be pushed to 1400 fps in a four inch barrel revolver with H110 or W296 powder.
The load I use a little is a combination of H110 powder and Hornady 125-grain XTP. This breaks 1680 fps out of the four inch barrel of the Ruger GP100.
This load shows why the .357 Magnum is sometimes called a shotgun on the hip. This kind of performance leaves the 10mm Auto, .38 Super, and .357 SIG in the dust.
Magnum Vs 44 Magnum
The .357 Magnum is a generally popular caliber that can be found anywhere ammunition is sold. The combination of versatility, including the use of the .38 Special subload, makes the .357 Magnum a very desirable caliber.
Among the author's favorite revolvers is this Python with a four-inch barrel. It is carried in a Galco Phoenix case, and a Galco Speedloader case is also used.
If you're going to get the most out of the .357 Magnum cartridge, you need a well-made revolver with good life and a smooth action. There are popular .357 Magnum revolvers with 2 to 3.5 inch barrels.
The problem is that the .357 Magnum, unlike the 9mm Luger and .45 ACP, is loaded with relatively heavy slow-burning powder. This powder does not burn completely in a short barrel.
Meet The Smith & Wesson Model 586: A .357 Magnum Revolver Like No Other
The result is a huge muzzle blast. Muzzle flash is simply powder that burns outside the barrel. For example, a 125 grain JHP can show 1440 fps in a four inch barreled revolver.
The velocity drops to 1,280-1,300 fps on the shorter barrel. This is due to the greater recoil of the lighter gun and also the increased muzzle.
By comparison, it's not hard to find a 9mm Luger 124 grain JHP that breaks over 1200 fps in a GLOCK 19. We've reached a point of diminishing returns in the short Magnum barrel.
In a four inch barrel revolver, the .357 Magnum significantly outperforms the 9mm Luger and .38 Special. Heavy .38s are useful. For example, the .38 Special Outdoorsman loaded by Buffalo Bore shakes 158 Grain SWC at over 1100 fps.

No 9mm Luger will do that! 125 grain at 1400 fps, 158 grain at 1300 or 145 grain Winchester Silvertip at 1320 fps are good loads for various Magnum jobs.
If you decide to go with a revolver and choose your leather accessories carefully, the four-inch barrel Magnum is a good companion for personal defense. You don't need to run open all the time.
Powerful but low-recoil loads are designed for personal defense. For example, the Remington 110-grain JHP broke 1344 fps in my Combat Magnum.
Remington's Golden Saber is designed for use in .357 Magnum revolvers with modest barrel lengths. It only averages 1200 fps in a four inch Smith and Wesson barrel.
