The Army is offering bonuses worth up to $40,000 or enlistment contracts of less than two years as it tries to recruit 6,000 more soldiers this year than planned.

In a reversal of a years-long drawdown, the Army is now required to add 16,000 more troops to the active ranks by Sept. 30. The growth, outlined in the 2017 national defense authorization bill, also calls for the Army to retain 9,000 more troops than originally planned.

But two years, USAREC hopes, will be a more controlled time that can move a potential recruit toward enlistment.
The Army also hopes the two-year enrollment will appeal to a class of kids just out of high school.
"There's a population out there that does this gap year," Martin said, using Malia Obama, who took a gap year before starting college, as an example.
Martin and his team hope the promise of some life experience and money for college will attract smart, motivated high school seniors who are interested in serving but want the option to continue into their 20s, for example.
