22 Sig Sauer - No, SIG SAUER's new .22LR pistol — the P322 — is not a P320. But you'd be forgiven for mistaking it for one at first glance. When SIG started to fill the rimfire hole in their pistol line, they didn't decide to have another company make a new pistol for them. Instead, unlike other entrants into the rimfire pistol space, SIG embarked on a 15-month effort to design and manufacture the new P322 itself. The magazines for the P322 are also made in the USA.
SIG engineers apparently kept their competitors' pistols in mind as they specified new designs that match or surpass them, building in just about every feature consumers are looking for in a rimfire semi-automatic pistol these days. The one spec that will garner the most attention, however, is the P322's impressive 20+1 standard magazine capacity that beats anything out there.

In the end, what SIG has come up with is perhaps the most complete .22LR semi-automatic pistol on the market.

It is not difficult to see the similarity of the SIG family with the P322. The new rimfire pistol carries several design cues from the P320 and P365. That said, unlike the shotguns mentioned above, the rimfire P322 is a completely new design from the ground up using a stainless steel frame and a finely serrated hard coat anodized aluminum slide.
Unlike the P320 and P365, the P322 is not a modular design. The fire control group cannot be removed by the user and placed in another grip frame.
The P322, with its four-inch barrel, resembles the P320 compact pistol. But this is not a gun fired for a striker. The P322 is a unique, single-shot, hammer-locked pistol. And unlike many rimfire pistols, you can safely dry it as many times as you like.
The P322's grip is slightly smaller than the standard P320 with the same texturing you'll find on standard models of that pistol and the P365. With the P322's slight undercut trigger, almost any shooter with almost any size hand will be able to get a good solid grip on the light recoil .22 pistol and be more than comfortable shooting it.

Unfortunately, Jeremy didn't have a P320 when he took the photo above, but it's a P322 on the left (attached to its threaded barrel adapter), a P365 XL in the middle, and a standard P365 on the right. In case you are wondering, the P322 does not work in P320 pistols. SIG will sell guns for the pistol and third party gun manufacturers will put them out as well.
SIG ships the P322 with two standard US-made 20-round magazines, giving the pistol a 20+1 round capacity. This means more time to shoot and less time to load, which everyone appreciates, but until recently we had a lot of rimfire pistols.
If 21 rounds aren't enough, SIG expects to start shipping extended 25-round magazines in a few weeks (they'll also have 10-rounders for you poor souls living in limited-capacity states).
SIG was a bit vague on the cost of the extra magazines, but it looks like the 20-rounders will run around $29.95 and the extended 25-rounds will cost around $34.95. or about

Again, SIG was not unaware of their competition's offerings when they designed this pistol. The P322's closest rimfire competitors, the FN 502 Tactical and Taurus TX22, have 15- and 16-round magazine capacities, respectively. A similarly sized GLOCK 44 holds only 10 rounds. Yes, the KelTec CP33 packs 33 rounds, but that gun is its own beast and isn't really directly comparable to a SIG, FN, Taurus, or even a GLOCK.
The SIG includes a sleeve to help slide that loading tab when inserting a round into the magazine. It's nice, but in my experience, after loading dozens of P322 magazines, you probably only need a magazine if you have poor hand strength or very sensitive fingers.
Tabs on each side that leave the follower make loading the P322's magazines up to 20 rounds very easy (we haven't seen a 25-round magazine yet).
SIG has equipped the P322 with a nice set of green fiber optic iron sights. The front sight is fixed and the rear sight is adjustable for elevation and windage.

But wait...all the really cool kids are running optics on their guns these days, aren't they? you peck
SIG is well aware of that trend, which is why they included an optical cut in the aluminum slide of the P322 that will mount RMSc and - of course - SIG ROMEOZero micro red reflex dots.
Although the irons are excellent, the P322 makes a really good platform if you are new to handgun red dots and want to get comfortable shooting one.
Being a unique single action design, the P322 has a frame safety. All controls are completely opaque.

While the P322 may not be a modular design, its trigger is. SIG ships the P322 mounted with the ever popular flat trigger shoe. But if you are a fan of traditional curved triggers, SIG also includes one of those, with a tool to change it (although you can easily do without the tool).
No matter which shoe you use, the P322's trigger breaks cleanly and has a relatively short, very tactile and audible reset. It's a recipe for fun with a quick and accurate mag dump.
Landing is as easy as any modern attack-fired weapon. Lock the slide back, turn the recoil lever and tilt the slide up and over the fixed barrel of the P322.
The P322 barrel has a wire protector. Remove and screw on the threaded barrel adapter to attach the suppressor of your choice.
Glock Vs Sig Sauer: Which Is Better?
SIG includes a threaded barrel adapter with the pistol so you can suppress and shoot the P322 like the polite and civilized owner we know you are.
As should be pretty clear by now, the P322 is a complete pistol, to say the least. It has everything you could ask for in a modern rimfire pistol. But none of that means anything unless it's reliable, and that's a bar some rimfire semi-automatic pistols have had trouble clearing.
SIG told us they put the P322 through the same reliability testing as their service rifles, not that anyone expects this rimfire pistol to be used that way. They tell us they've run 24,000 rounds and counting through the P322, including 5,000 dry fire pulls.
I shot the hell out of the P322 at a press event, putting over 1,000 rounds through several guns, and during that time we pretty much abused one of them.

We divided our group into three teams and shot a steel challenge match in eight stages. The other two teams brought a few guns with them. However, our five-man team fired all eight stages with a single gun chosen at random to see if we could fail. It wasn't.
As you probably know, rimfire pistols suffer from, well, rimfire ammunition. It's not the most reliable ammo out there and it's ugly as hell.
One of the things that SIG did to improve the reliability of the P322 was to add fluting to the camera. This is similar to some HK guns (eg the P7 and MP5). The flute redirects some of the high-pressure gases between the case and the chamber to help eject empty cases. It is especially important with rimfire ammunition.
Does it work? Apparently. Look at the cases above shot with the P322. You can see the carbon marks that indicate the flutes are working as designed.

During that eight-stage steel challenge (we used CCI mini-mags) the five of us fired hundreds of rounds, with only one failure to fire. Upon closer inspection, that failure was due to a bad round...not unusual for rimfire ammunition. In fact, given the number of rounds we went through, the typical performance level of rimfire ammo is much lower than you'd expect given better things like mini-mags.
In fact, we just found a way to keep the P322 from going bang every time we pulled the trigger. . .
If you leave the magazine follower all the way and unload a round into it, the ammo can sometimes nose and misalign (above left). If this happens, the misaligned round will not feed into the chamber when it reaches the top of the stack. It is easily fixed by pressing on the loading tabs and taping the mag to the surface.
The good news is that it's a user error that you only make once. It's easy to avoid by lowering the follower enough to only charge once in a while. If you do this, the round will come out perfectly (top right) every time and you won't have a feeding problem.

Of course we don't. We didn't have a single case of rimlock in the thousands of rounds we shot at the press event. The magazines sink into the rounds naturally as you load them and they work very well.
